After 40 years with Stargardt's disease, I sometimes forget what people with normal vision can see. When my fellow humans point something out to me, I'm often surprised: "What, you can see that?!"
Recently, I went shopping with my partner. As is often the case in Kenya, the main street of our town is lined with street vendors selling their wares. One of them sells second-hand books and is always surprisingly well-stocked. Recently, his selection has been particularly interesting, as he has come into possession of the estate of a well-known, recently deceased Kenyan author.
As we were walking, my partner said to me:
- Ah, on our way home, we'll make a stop at my book seller. He has a few good books for sale.
To which I reply:
- OK. Did he send you a message?
- No, I've seen some of the titles he has displayed today.
- How is that? Can you read the titles from here?
- Yes, the big ones.
The book stand is on the other side of the street.....
